The Public Library?

Today I had to take Phillip to the library for a school project.  In the past two years I have probably been to the library maybe once.  I have long since written off the library in favor of Google search and other Internet resources.  We have a Kindle and I find its paper white display and crisp fonts much easier to read than printed books.  For unknown reasons, I find it very difficult to read PDF files, I print them out first.  Since being involved with Android development we have several Tablets, unfortunately we don’t have an iPad so I can’t speak for the whole experience.  As of the time I am writing this post Android tables are not very useful for online (print) media, it is just too early for tablets to replicate the print magazine experience.

So, back to the library.  While waiting for Phillip I walked over to the magazine section and picked up Stereophile and started reading.  It was like I was transformed back 10 years ago to a time when Stereophile was a great magazine, I am happy to say it still is.  After reading the magazine I wandered over to the music section.  Wow, there were thousands of CD’s!  I forgot that you don’t have to buy everything on iTunes.  There were movies and books and newspapers and magazines and all kids of great stuff.  How was it possible that I forgot about how wonderful the local library was?  I will stop here and close with a suggestion that you re-visit your local library and re-discover how great it is.

Ellis Island

Phillip and I recently took a trip back to NY to visit grandma and grandpa.  I decided to take Phillip on a brief excursion to the Statue of Liberty and Ellis Island since I have not been to either in more than 40 years.  We were suprised to see at Ellis Island on the list of names that came through the island our family!

I know a reasonable amount about the Ehrlich side of the family but almost nothing about the Orner side.  So I guess I need track down the long lost Orner cousins and see what they might know.

Norio Ohga

Just saw this posting on the Internet:

Passing of Norio Ohga, Senior Advisor and former President and Chairman, Sony Corporation

Tokyo, Japan — It is with great sadness that Sony Corporation today announced the loss of Norio Ohga, Senior Advisor and former President and Chairman, Sony Corporation. Mr. Ohga passed away at 9:14 AM on April 23, 2011 in Tokyo. The cause of death was multiple organ failure. He was 81 years old. A private wake will be held among family and close relatives, and a company service will take place at a later date.

When I worked at Sony Ohga was the man running the company and Morita was the visionary.  Years before I joined, Ohga was the person who came up with the “Walkman” product that was the start of the personal music player which was a massive success for Sony.
